The Israeli military has issued a statement saying it killed Ahmad Balut, commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Unit, in a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday. It also claimed to have killed Muhammad Ali Bazzi, head of the intelligence department of the Nasser Unit, and Hussein Hassan Romani, Hezbollah’s aerial defence observation officer. Hezbollah’s strength has benefitted from substantial financial and military support from its ally, Iran, which, in addition to playing a formative role in the group’s creation in 1982, has continued to act in concert with it over the decades since.
