Israeli tanks and troops pressing toward Gaza city were meeting fierce resistance from Hamas militants using mortars and hit-and-run attacks from tunnels. The four-week war is closing in on the Gaza Strip’s main population centre in the north. At a briefing, Israeli officials said that 17 of its troops had died in combat so far.
