Addressing the UNGA’s 80th session, Guterres gave particular emphasis to the war in Gaza, which is set to define this year’s General Debate. “In Gaza, the horrors are approaching a third monstrous year. They are the result of decisions that defy basic humanity. The scale of death and destruction are beyond any other conflict in my years as secretary-general,” he said. He also referenced the ICJ which has delivered several orders on Gaza, including calling on Israel to take steps to prevent genocide, allow for investigation and boost humanitarian aid.
