Following the government’s disclosure that it was taking new loans to pay back previous debt, foreign loan disbursements increased to $4.6 billion in the last five months, with three-quarters of them used to finance budget shortfalls and build foreign exchange reserves.

The government received $4.6 billion in gross foreign loans from July through November of fiscal year 2021-22, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
