The SDF has described the clashes as a “highly dangerous development” and says government forces seizing the prison “could have serious security repercussions that threaten stability and pave the way for a return to chaos and terrorism”. The fighting is under way at the al-Aqtan prison holding ISIL detainees on the outskirts of Raqqa city in the country’s northeast, the SDF said. Under a sweeping integration deal agreed on Sunday, responsibility for prisons housing ISIL detainees was meant to be transferred to the Syrian government.
