The European Union will “continue direct engagement” with Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, the group that led factions in the offensive to overthrow the regime in Syria, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday. “We have to step up and continue our direct engagement with HTS and other factions. We will enhance our engagement in early recovery, including basic services like electricity and water and infrastructure,” clarified the EU official during a press conference in Ankara.
