Ahead of the UN’s two-state conference, co-sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, almost two dozen French town halls were on Monday flying the Palestinian flag. The decision came in defiance of an interior ministry warning not to do so ahead of the recognition of a Palestinian state by President Emmanuel Macron. The president is due to recognise a Palestinian state in New York later on Monday. The flags of both Israel and Palestine, as well as peace images of a dove and olive branch, were projected late on Sunday onto the Eiffel Tower, which illuminated in celebration of the recognition decision.
