The international community has been urged to take “collective responsibility” to protect aid workers as record numbers of them were killed in the line of duty last year. Official figures show 280 aid workers died in 33 countries in 2023, with fears growing that this year’s toll could be higher. More than half of the deaths in 2023 were recorded in the October-to-December period, the first three months of the Israel-Gaza war, mostly as a result of air strikes.
