US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has launched an extraordinary attack on Denmark, claiming its neutrality in the First World War is evidence that it should not be the custodian of Greenland. “I will remind everyone that Denmark remained neutral during World War One,” he told reporters at USA House in Davos. “They actually sold quite a bit [of land] to the Germans,” he added. Asked if he is worried that European nations may pull investments from the US Treasury market, he said: “The size of Denmark’s investment in US Treasury bonds, like Denmark itself, is irrelevant.”
