Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit told the UN Security Council that the ceasefire in Gaza does not represent a solution to lasting peace. Mr Aboul Gheit said true stability could only be achieved from the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He highlighted the continuing threat to international peace posed by the denial of Palestinian statehood, noting that recent conflicts have not only devastated Gaza but have also had wider regional effects.
