Turkey on Sunday night began the process of counting votes in the pivotal presidential ballot that would decide the country’s next head of state. Polls closed at 5pm local time, with counting expected to be completed far quicker than in the first round two weeks ago. In the previous vote, incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan, from Justice and Development Party (AKP) fell slightly short of the percentent needed to avoidsecond-roundurunoffoff – but five points ahead of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
