The United Nations has recognised October 11th as International Day of the Girl Child to encourage girls’ empowerment and the realisation of their human rights.

The Day of the Girl also highlights the issues that girls confront, such as assault, educational inequity, and child marriage. These obstacles are particularly daunting for millions of girls living in nations prone to violence and instability. When women and girls lack power in their families and communities, every shock—whether it’s armed conflict, drought, flood, or COVID-19—has a different impact on them than it does on others.
