The head of a UN investigative body has said he advised Syria’s new authorities that he is willing to travel there to secure evidence of atrocities committed by the Assad regime. The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism is keen to access evidence from an “interlocking series of crime scenes” and “establish the fate of tens of thousands of Syrians who were illegally arrested and detained and suffered years of violence”, said IIIM head Robert Petit.
