Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for talks with Egyptian officials on the war on Gaza, efforts towards a ceasefire, help for the Palestinians, and their goal of statehood, the group said. He arrived as efforts by the US, Qatar, and Egypt to halt the fighting in Gaza and enact a detainee and hostage swap between Hamas and Israel moved slowly. Mr Haniyeh, who is based in Qatar, is widely believed to have lost much of his authority to Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s leader in Gaza, who has the support of the group’s powerful military wing.
