British Labour leader Keir Starmer said that there should be a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, setting out his position before an expected parliamentary debate on the conflict. With Labour well ahead in the polls for a general election this year, Mr Starmer is keen to present a united front to voters, but the conflict in Gaza has tested that. Nearly a third of his MPs defied him last year and backed calls for an immediate ceasefire, and the party had to withdraw support for a candidate over his comments about Israel this month.
