As per Israeli and American sources, up to 80 percent of the Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip remain intact after weeks of attempts to destroy them. According to these sources, between 20 to 40 percent of the tunnels have been destroyed –most of them in the northern Gaza Strip. At the end of 2023, Israel installed a system of pumps in the northern Gaza Strip to flood the tunnels with seawater, as part of an operation dubbed “Atlantis Sea.” Despite concerns that this could endanger sewage infrastructure and buildings and could damage freshwater reservoirs, Israel implemented it on several occasions and installed another pump in Khan Younis in early January.
