Palestinians are worrying about contamination of their drinking water after two years of Israeli bombardment of critical infrastructure. They know the water they drink, the air they breathe, and the food they eat may not be safe. But when every day is a fight for survival – a fight to find water and bread – safety becomes a secondary element in their lives. They have no choice – they drink contaminated water. There is no luxury of avoiding risk. Despite the sheer level of destruction from the war, there is little effort under way to clear out unexploded ordnance or manage environmental contamination.
