UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the pause in fighting in Gaza but warned that much more ‘has to be done’ to ensure a lasting peace. “The Secretary-General welcomes the agreement reached by Israel and Hamas, with the mediation of Qatar supported by Egypt and the United States. This is an important step in the right direction, but much more needs to be done,” read a statement from his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq. Guterres has been vocal in calling for an end to the war and the impact of the fighting on civilians, particularly children.
