Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), or Hashd al-Shaabi, says more than 2.3 million people have taken part in the funeral procession of Iran’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf. The PMF, an Iraqi state-sanctioned paramilitary umbrella group, said that the number of mourners was continuing to rise as crowds arrived from across Iraq. Khamenei’s remains were transported to Najaf as part of a multi-day funeral procession spanning Iran and Iraq, with ceremonies also held, or planned, in Qom, Karbala and his hometown of Mashhad, where he is due to be buried.
