Leaders of the G7 countries on Thursday offered to work with any new Syrian government that rules on a “credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian” basis and respects women, minorities and human rights. A joint statement by the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan called for an inclusive “Syrian-led and Syrian-owned” process to put a new government in place after the fall of Bashar Al Assad’s regime. They said they were “hopeful that anyone seeking a role in governing Syria” would work to prevent state institutions from collapsing and show commitment to the rights of all Syrians.
