Hamas said its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, left Egypt after talks with officials in the country about a potential pause in the Gaza war and an exchange of hostages and detainees with Israel. The group did not say whether Mr Haniyeh’s talks with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel led to a breakthrough. The talks in Cairo came before a high-level meeting in Paris this weekend, where international mediators will present a new proposal to halt the conflict.
