Author and sociologist Nida Kirmani shared her perspective on privilege and rap on Twitter that provoked debate by many music and Coke Studio fans. The activist wrote that “rap is an art form of the marginalized and Faris Shafi being an elitist should leave it”. She also claimed that most members of the music, literature, and TV/film fraternities were from the Punjabi elite.
