Thousands of Kashmiris braved the bitter cold to attend the funerals of two civilians killed in a security operation on Friday, signalling the start of a widespread shutdown in the illegally occupied Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Authorities had hurriedly interred the pair at a remote graveyard. Their family insisted they had no ties to the extremists, accusing security forces of murdering them in “cold blood,” and asking their bodies be returned for an appropriate Islamic burial.
