Egypt is preparing an area at the Gaza border that could be used to shelter Palestinians if Israeli launches an offensive in Rafah, in what sources described as a contingency plan by Cairo. Egypt, which denied making any such preparations, has repeatedly raised concerns over the possibility that Israel’s devastating Gaza offensive could displace Palestinians across the border and into the Sinai Peninsula. The US has repeatedly said it would oppose any displacement of Palestinians out of Gaza.
