US Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended Washington’s decision to veto a resolution put forward by Algeria at the UN Security Council this week calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war in Gaza. Mr Blinken told reporters at a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Brazil that the US was pursuing what it believed to be the most effective way forward. “In our judgment, the best way to do that is to do exactly what we’re doing right now, which is to work intensely on an agreement on the hostages,” he said.
