The leaders of the US, the UK, and Australia announced that Canberra would acquire conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines. US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak gathered at a naval center in San Diego, California. China and Russia’s reaction to the announcement was hostile after the architects of the deal said it was intended to deepen defense ties.
