According to a World Bank survey, the number of people in Afghanistan who cannot afford food and other essentials has doubled since the Islamic Emirate takeover of the country in August 2021. The Afghanistan Welfare Survey found that 70% of respondents said that their households were unable to cover basic food and non-food needs, up from 35% in May 2021. The share of Afghan households has switched to lower-quality or less expensive food and rose from 56% to 85% in the July-August 2021 period, it stated.
