Israel’s five-month war on Gaza is a “shameful attempt to create another Nakba,” a representative of the African Union has told the International Court of Justice. “Nothing can justify the unspeakable suffering and horrors inflicted on the population of Gaza. That is the essence of the Palestinian tragedy for over a century,” said Hajer Gueldich, legal counsel of the African Union. Mohamed Helal, law professor at Moritz College of Law, who also spoke on behalf of the African Union at the hearings on the legality of Israeli occupation, said Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967 was illegal and must end “as soon as possible”.
