Parliament passes election, NAB bills

Islamabad: Parliament's joint session on Thursday passed the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2022, and National Accountability (Amendment) Bill, 2022, returned by President Arif Alvi. The election amendment bill has abolished the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in polls, while the NAB bill has formulated a post-retirement procedure for its chairman, among other changes.

Polls likely in Pakistan before appointment of new Army Chief

Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Federal Minister of Defence, said on Wednesday that a general election could be held in November before the next army chief is appointed. The military minister told BBC Urdu that the caretaker administration could resign before November and a new government would take over. Regarding the extension of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, he said that the army chief had announced that he wasn’t seeking an extension in his tenure.  

Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo, to be sworn in today as Balochistan CM

Mir Abdul Qaddoos Bizenjo, the leader of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Balochistan today (Friday) at 4 p.m. at the Governor House in Quetta. Governor Syed Zahoor Agha will swear in Bizenjo, who was elected Chief Minister of Balochistan without opposition. The news comes just one day after Bizenjo earned the support of PTI legislative leader Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind, who announced his withdrawal from the campaign and endorsement of Bizenjo for Chief Minister.

Few anticipate any hiccups for Rakhmon as he closes in on three decades in power to overtake Kazakhstan's recently retired Nursultan Nazarbayev in Central Asian longevity stakes.
