In response to Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine, President Joe Biden and Western allies vowed more sanctions and humanitarian aid on Thursday, but their pledges fell short of the more robust military assistance that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy begged for in a pair of live-video addresses.

Biden also declared that the United States will accept up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees – though he noted that many would choose to remain closer to home – and would contribute an additional $1 billion in food, medicine, water, and other necessities.
