Belgian Member of the European Parliament, Marc Botenga, said Israel was waging a “war against the press” with “the support of Europe” after it killed five Al Jazeera journalists. “Nearly 200 journalists killed since late 2023. More than in any other modern war. A war against the press. With the support of Europe,” he said in a post on X. Israeli troops killed five Al Jazeera staff, including prominent correspondent Anas Al Sharif, in a strike on their media tent outside Al Shifa Hospital. Mr Botenga, a member of the left-wing Workers’ Party of Belgium, is one of the most vocal critics in the European Parliament of Israel’s war.
