According to a spokesman for Afghanistan’s foreign ministry, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Kabul on Thursday to meet with his Afghan counterpart, marking the highest-level visit by a Chinese official since the Taliban took power last year.

Wang landed in Kabul on Thursday, less than a week before Beijing hosts a conference of Afghanistan’s neighbours to discuss ways to help the Taliban government.

Beijing had worked to retain connections with the Taliban even before the Taliban took control of the country in August, as US-led foreign soldiers departed. However, China, like other countries, has refused to recognise the Taliban authority.
