The late former emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away earlier today, was a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights throughout his 18-year rule that ended in 2013. He visited Gaza in 2012, pledging $400m for reconstruction, repeatedly condemning Israeli military action and seeking to mediate divisions between Palestinian factions.
